What role does art play in the climate crisis? Join a powerful program during the closing of The Call of the O’o – Nature Under Pressure and discover how the imaginative power of art helps us understand and navigate the challenges of our time.
Imagination as a Force for Change
Under the guidance of moderator Evanne Nowak, we will explore the role of art in a world struggling with declining biodiversity, species extinction, and the depletion of the earth. Be inspired by leading artists who each reflect on ecological issues in their unique way:
Milah van Zuilen – A visual artist and aspiring forest ecologist, Milah combines art and ecology to question our relationship with nature. Using plant materials such as leaves, she creates geometric forms – a sharp reflection on how we categorize and control nature.
Diana Scherer – A visual artist who combines botany, textiles, and material research in her work. With her project Interwoven, Diana transforms root systems into artworks that challenge us to reconsider the underground world and our connection to nature. Her innovative work has received the New Material Award for sustainability and creativity.
Matthew C. Wilson & Emilia Tapprest – This filmmaker and artist duo explores alternative histories in As Messengers, imagining how the relationship between humans and nature could have evolved differently. Their mosaic film weaves together stories about biodiversity, where various life forms act as messengers to alert us to the current ecological crisis.
