The Netherlands as seen by Gerrit de Jager
A notable archive within the Allard Pierson comic collection is that of cartoonist Gerrit de Jager (1954), who made fun of the Netherlands for decades with The Doorzon Family. The Allard Pierson presents a selection of his work from 4 November to 12 March 2023.
As caricatures of the average Dutch suburban family, the Doorzons have been commenting on Dutch society for over forty years. Vulgar language, sexism, political incorrectness, justifying the unjustifiable – the Doorzons leave nothing to chance.
The exhibition shows how De Jager’s work develops and how his characters evolve with the times.
