Research Room

Material from the Allard Pierson collections can be consulted in the Research Room. Frequently consulted reference works are also available in the Research Room, and in the Rosenthaliana, Book History and Mennonitica period rooms.

You can visit the Reading Room at the Allard Pierson to view material such as manuscripts, printed books, atlases, maps, letters, prints and photographs. There are 40 study spaces available. You can use two PCs to consult the catalogue without logging in, while UvA staff and students can log in on two separate PCs. A multifunctional and a microfiche reader/printer are also available. The Research Room also houses various reference libraries and the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, Book History and Mennonitica period rooms as well as the Map Room.

UvA students and staff can use the wireless UvA network. Staff and students from other universities can connect to the Eduroam network. The UvA Open Wi-Fi network is also available, although this is the slowest and least safe network.

Library card

Holders of a student or staff card from the UvA or HvA, or of a legitimate library card, can consult material from the Allard Pierson. You can apply for a library card at the UB information desk at Singel 425, or online at . After receiving your application we will send you a message when your library card is ready to be collected. This normally takes two working days.

A library card is valid for a week and costs € 15. This card enables you to request and consult, but not borrow, materials from the repository. An annual card costs € 40. The card is free for staff and students of all Dutch universities that fall under the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), the Open University and the Amsterdam University of the Arts, for staff of the National Library of the Netherlands and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and for members of the Amsterdam University Society.

Previously mentioned materials can be requested through CatalogusPlus. However, not all materials from the Allard Pierson can be found online. If you need help in finding information, ask our staff in the Reading Room on weekdays from 09.30 to 17.00, or complete one of the following contact forms:
